Information technology is ranked number 66 on Rolling Rock 'southward 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

Background [edit]

"Bridge over Troubled H2o" was equanimous past Paul Simon in early on 1969; the song came to him very quickly, so much and so that he asked himself: "Where did that come up from? It doesn't seem like me."[ix] [ten] [11] The title concept was inspired by Claude Jeter's line "I'll be your bridge over deep water if you lot trust in my name," which Jeter sang with his group, the Swan Silvertones, in the 1959 song "Mary Don't You Weep."[12] [13] According to gospel producer and historian Anthony Heilbut, Simon acknowledged his debt to Jeter in person, and handed Jeter a check.[14] Simon named Johann Sebastian Bach's "O Sacred Head, At present Wounded" equally inspiration for parts of the melody.[15] Simon wrote the song initially on guitar only transposed it to the pianoforte to reverberate the gospel influence and conform Garfunkel's vocalisation.[5]

Simon told his partner, Fine art Garfunkel, that Garfunkel should sing it lonely, the "white choirboy mode", though Simon adds harmony on the final verse.[9] Garfunkel felt information technology was not right for him;[5] he liked Simon's falsetto on the demo and suggested that Simon sing. At the suggestion of Garfunkel and producer Roy Halee, Simon wrote an extra verse and a "bigger" ending, though he felt it was less cohesive with the earlier verses.[16] The final poetry was written nearly Simon's then-wife Peggy Harper, who had noticed her first gray hairs ("Sail on, silvergirl").[17] [xviii] It does not refer to a drug abuser'southward hypodermic needle, as is sometimes claimed.[nineteen] The verse was Garfunkel's idea, just Simon reportedly did non similar it.[20]

"Span over Troubled Water" was the concluding track recorded for the anthology but the first completed, with an additional ii weeks of post-product.[five] Simon initially composed the song in One thousand major, just arranger and composer Jimmie Haskell transposed the vocal to E-flat major to adjust Garfunkel's voice.[21] The song's instrumental parts were recorded in Baronial 1969 in California, to make it easier for Garfunkel to go to United mexican states to motion picture Grab-22.[8] [11] Simon wanted a gospel piano audio, and hired session musician Larry Knechtel. Joe Osborn played two separate bass tracks, 1 loftier and the other depression. A string section entering in the third verse completed the arrangement. The drums were played by Hal Blaine in an echo sleeping room to reach a hall effect and Los Angeles session percussionist Gary Coleman played the Vibraphone. The arranger Ernie Freeman labelled his string organization as "Like a Pitcher of Water".[22]

Simon and Garfunkel returned to New York in Nov 1969 to tape the vocals.[23] [6] [5] [xi] The vocal style in "Bridge over Troubled Water" was inspired by Phil Spector'due south technique in "One-time Human being River" by The Righteous Brothers.[24] Simon said it sounded like the Beatles' "Let It Be", stating in a Rolling Rock interview: "They are very similar songs, certainly in instrumentation."[25]

As their relations frayed preceding their 1970 breakup, Simon began to feel regret for allowing Garfunkel to sing it solo:

He felt I should have done it, and many times on a stage, though, when I'd be sitting off to the side and Larry Knechtel would be playing the piano and Artie would be singing "Bridge", people would stomp and cheer when information technology was over, and I would think, "That's my song, man..."[9]
